5 Tips for Decorating your Bedroom
1. Set Your Bed in the Center of a Wall
Your bed should always be the main and focal point of your bedroom, and in smaller rooms, the best way to place is in the center of the room’s most visible wall. That wall is usually the one that faces you when you are standing in the doorway. If you place it like this you will have sufficient space to access your bed from both sides, and if your room is large enough you can even put nightstands on either side of the bed.
2. Put Your Dresser in Your Closet
Large pieces of furniture can make small rooms look crowded and with that even smaller than they are. If your closet is big enough, you can dodge this problem by using it as a place for your chest or dresser. You will free up floor space and with that make your room look spacious and you will have all of your clothes in one convenient and accessible spot.
3. Place Your Rug Thoughtfully
Your bedroom rug might appear to be a minor decorative detail, but it can considerably help make a small room look larger. If your bed is in the center of the wall you can put your rug about two-thirds of the way under your bed so that you will have something soft to step on when you wake up. If your bed is in a corner then try placing the rug beside your bed or under another piece of furniture, such as your dresser. Not only is placement important but you also need to consider the size of the rug! If the room is smaller, it is essential to have the right size, so it doesn’t overwhelm the room.
4. Get Inventive and Creative With Storage Space
Storage is important in small spaces and especially in the bedroom where you keep most of your belongings. When you don’t have a lot of space, you must be creative and inventive with your storage. A good idea is to use storage boxes that you can place under the bed to stash out-of-season clothing away and custom shelving to store things like books and shoes. You can even put a storage ottoman at the foot of your bed for extra seating and storage.
5. Make a sketch first
Furnishing, arranging and decorating a small bedroom can be very frustrating if you don’t first have an idea of where you would like everything to go. Before you start moving your furniture grab a pen and a piece of paper and sketch your room layout ideas. This will help you visualize your ideas and save unnecessary frustrations! If you don’t like drawing, try using a virtual room planner to lay out your space. You can find plenty of them online for free!
